Foundations Zambia is a Christian organisation and it’s aim is ‘to inspire and equip people into a deeper walk with Christ through biblical teaching on farming, family, and finance.’ As part of this vision they recruit a number of interns for a year’s worth of training in farming as well as the teaching.
There are 8 interns and 2 team leaders. Ben and Dan then oversee the whole team. It’s amazing what they do here. Right across the road from Ben and Cat’s house is a big piece of land that is home to a number of different crops that the interns work on together. They then also have their own plots of land to cultivate near their homes. Last week, I accompanied Dan as he visited a few of the interns farms to check on their progress.
This week in particular I have focused my efforts on photographing the interns’ work here on the training fields. On Monday morning the light was so beautiful, it presented me with the perfect backdrop to photograph them hard at work, preparing a new plot for vegetables.
They could just plant the vegetable seeds straight into the ground but, to give them the best chance of survival, 2 of the interns prepared trays to plant them in. Part of the process entails heating the soil to kill anything that might hurt the new little seedlings.
I love photographing people and documentary photography is one of my favourite types of photography. But what I’ve enjoyed most about the interns is spending time with them, getting to sing Zambian worship songs with them on a Monday morning and the joyful attitude they show towards me. They are always smiling and welcoming. They put up with me taking loads of photos and they are so gracious in my inability to do more than greet them in their own language.
